Development of biotelemetry method combining SSBL and pinger synchronizing methods

A new biotelemetry method for instantaneous and detailed tracking of fish installed with a pinger from a vessel is developed. The biotelemetry method combining SSBL (Super Short Base Line) and pinger synchronizing methods makes it possible to get both the direction and the range of the fish relative to the vessel. Our design method to maximize the signal to noise ratio is applied and a hydrophone array configuration is devised to realize high precision or a wide detection range. The pinger synchronizing method is improved by decreasing the error caused by the deviation of transmitting period of the pinger. In order to confirm the effectiveness and feasibility of this method, we develop a prototype system for the present method, test the performance in a water tank, and track actual fish.
