Department of Marine Biosciences Tenure-Track Assistant Professor (1 position)

 Based on the tenure track system in the Graduate School of Marine Science and Technology in the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, application is now open for an assistant professor post on the tenure track at Department of Marine Biosciences, Division of Marine Science, Research Organization, so as to nurture an outstanding faculty staff who can play an active role in future.
 Under this system, assistant professors (tenure track) are employed for a limited term of office to teach and conduct research and then evaluated in a strict and impartial manner to determine their suitability as a faculty member with the aim of letting them attain the tenure of an assistant professor or associate professor (a full-time faculty member with no fixed term of office).
 The employed assistant professor (tenure track) shall be allowed the use of an independent research space in principle and provided with assistance such as a mentor and funds to start-up his/her research. Compared to full-time faculty staff, the workload for tasks such as giving lectures and attending meetings is reduced. A separate qualification assessment is conducted before the staff is certified to work in the graduate school.

4. Educational and Research Responsibilities:
  The Department of Marine Biosciences carries out interdisciplinary education and research and adopts a basic principle of advancing education and research while maintaining a close relationship between biological science, life science, biotechnology, biological chemistry, and resources/analysis. This advertised position aims to strengthen the education and research in Fish behaviour, Population biology, Fish pathology, Fish nutrition, Genome science field.
  On top of devoting 70% of his/her efforts to research, the recruit is also expected to shoulder the following subject lessons as a guide.
(undergraduate program) A portion of one of lectures concerning following subjects and the freshman seminars; Fish behaviour, Population biology, Fish pathology, Fish Nutrition, Genome science
(master's course ) A portion of one of lectures concerning following subjects; Fish behaviour, Population biology, Fish pathology, Genome science, Fish nutriton
  (doctoral course ) A portion of one of lectures concerning following subjects; Fish behaviour, Population biology, Fish pathology, Genome science, Fish nutrition
5. Compensation Package
  Conditions such as salary, welfare, benefits, etc. are the same as general faculty staff.
6. Tenure Mid-Term Evaluation and Tenure Review
  The tenure mid-term evaluation will be carried within 3 years while the tenure review will be carried out within 5 years.
7. Research Environment
  The employed tenure track assistant professor will be provided with independent research space and research funds amounting to 10 million yen in 2013 (first year) and 5 million yen in 2014 (second year) under the “Program to Disseminate Tenure Tracking System” by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology”. In addition, 3.2 million yen will be provided by the university in the first year (2013) as start-up research expenses, and twice the usual amount paid to assistant professors will be provided to the tenure track assistant professors after 2014. Moreover, it is guaranteed that 70% of the efforts will be devoted to research over the tenure track period.
* The research funds in the first and second year come from the budget of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and these may vary depending on how the budget is allocated.
8. Application Requirements:
(1) PhD holder
(2) Possess track record in the educational and research area mentioned in Point 4 above
(3) Able to undertake and conduct lessons for the subjects mentioned in Point 4 above
(4) Ability to provide research guidance for master's course preferred
(5) Able to conduct undergraduate lectures in Japanese or English, and post-graduate lectures and research guidance in English
(6) Able to proactively take on other tasks besides devoting 70% of efforts to research
(7) Researchers with less than 10 years of experience after obtaining their PhDs at the time of the application deadline
(8) Age below 40 (as of April 1, 2013)
(9) Must not be a tenure-track teacher selected to be eligible for the Special Coordination Funds for the Promotion of Science and Technology “Improvement of Research Environment for Young Researchers” and who is receiving subsidies for manpower and research costs from the these funds.

  List down your educational history, work history, awards and penalties, doctoral thesis theme (institution, date and serial number of doctoral degree obtained), society membership, and other highlights.
(2) List of research achievements (any format in A4 size) List down your literary works, academic papers [peer-reviewed] and other papers separately in reverse chronological order starting from now.
*Limited to those in publication at the time of application. Academic papers may include those with acceptance certificates which have been peer-reviewed.
*Underline your name in papers for which you are the first author (including sole author) or corresponding author so that it can be distinguished.
(3) Reprints or copies of academic papers (5 representative papers)
  *All academic papers are to be submitted for the final selection.
(4) Status of any competitive research funds received (any format in A4 size)
If you have received any research funds, list down the application subject, subsidizing institution, period and amount. Specify that each fund was awarded as the primary investigator or as a co- investigator.
(5) Summary of education and research to date(A4 size, 800 to 1,000 words)
(6) Educational and research aspirations after assuming appointment (A4 size, 800 to 1,000 words)
Points to Note:
1) Interviews may be required for the selection. In this case, transport expenses shall be at your own cost.
2) Submission of health certificate may be required.
3) Application details shall be kept strictly confidential and application documents will not be used for purposes other than for the selection. Application documents will not be returned in principle but disposed of accordingly after selection.
